These 14 pieces are the practice and concept work I created for the painting performance with the Santa Barbara Symphony, conducted by Gregory Vajda, this past weekend, April 13 and 14 at the Granada Theater in Santa Barbara. I Painted on stage with the Santa Barbara Symphony performing “Glasonovs Seasons” Saturday and Sunday to a full house of 1800 really nice people.
I felt the kindness. The music was divine. It was unbelievable painting with a live orchestra of amazing musicians.
I had only 9 minutes for the Winter movement, 5 minutes for Spring, 10 minutes for Summer, and 11 minutes for Fall. Also I had to paint them one after the other with no break so every second counted! Four separate canvases passed over to the wonderful stage hands, as I picked up the next canvas to be painted. There is a total of 8 designs for two performances.
I was asked to paint them 2×3 feet and have them look like the season movement that was being performed. For about 17 days I mixed at least 120 small plastic containers of acrylic colors and practiced painting really fast to each movement, learning to make my strokes work with the timing of the music. I had a wonderful time!
It was a great lesson for me and huge stretch since it can take me sometimes several months to do a painting and usually I paint alone and in the quiet space of my studio. The paintings that were performed are for sale on this site. Half of the proceeds will go towards the Santa Barbara Symphony. Enjoy!
